The High Shot Over Trees
So, you’ve knocked it a bit sideways off the tee and now you’ve got a big ol’ tree between you and the green for your second shot. In Mexico’s Punta Mita paradise, where I teach year-round, that would most likely be a palm. So here’s how to get the ball up quickly and clear that obstacle with no problem.
- Set up with the ball forward in your stance
- Lean your spine slightly away from the target, placing 60-70% of your weight on your rear foot
- Open the face slightly and play for a high, left to right ball-flight that will usually squirt rightward
- On the downswing feel like you throw the rear palm “under” through impact…this will lean the shaft backwards, adding dynamic loft to the clubhead
