oxford mens sportswear

oxford mens sportswearAmong the many golf apparel companies out there, Oxford mens sportswear has found perhaps the perfect balance between classic styling and what they like to call “modern sophistication,” and the new Fall line for 2018 — from men’s shirts and slacks to women’s jacquard vests, even to footwear — is no exception, prompting the company to don the motto, “Make Today Lucky.”

Thanks to its rich history in golf and lifestyle apparel, Oxford finds itself uniquely positioned to deliver contemporary garb with cutting edge technologies to today’s evolving market. They employ premium performance technology in polos utilizing either drirelease or coolmax.

“Drirelease is actually a brand new fiber,” said one representative recently. “It’s eighty five percent polyester, but it’s polyester mixed with a natural fiber, so it has a push-pull effect — permanent performance that does not wash out. It wicks, it’s easy care, it’s moisture management, it keeps you cool or keeps you comfortable. And it’s natural to the touch. The hand-feel on this is amazing — it feels like cotton, but it’s 15 percent cotton. It performs amazing. You can wear this on the hottest day of the year and you’re completely comfortable.” New this season is the incorporation of drirelease in jacquard knits, as in the Myers Performance Polo. This polo features a tonal mini jacquard pattern with a self-collar offered in three color combinations.

The new Albright Performance Polo is a Coolmax/Spandex jersey stripe that has striking fall heather colors in the ground. The Winfall Polo features long sleeves and a full button front; it’s designed to move with you like a knit, but in a woven shirt styling. The Howell continues to be a big hit — easy care, comfort and moisture wicking make this the go-to shirt every day of the week. For the cooler days there are new fabrics offered in the Glenwood — textural herringbone plaids and brushed flannel.

The warm array of colors and fabrics continue through layered pieces like the Oakdale double knit quarter-zip pullover, the Ottley full-zip vest with heather knit collar and lots of pockets for storage, and the Brunswick hybrid jacket crafted from cotton twill with a water repellent finish.

The Woodruff 5-pocket stretch herringbone pant is available in five colors this season. The fabric has a subtle surface interest that is washed for a soft hand feel. Featuring a genuine leather patch, these pants are sure to be a favorite for this season.

On the footwear front there’s the Reid chukka boot, with a leather upper and sole and the Quincy penny loafer in two new colors. All Oxford shoes and boots crafted in Brazil.

antigua golf 2018

antigua golf 2018As always, Antigua Golf puts its finger directly on the pulse of the widest possible range of style sensibilities with its 2018 offerings. Of course the spring line takes precedence well into golf season, but the fall line is right on its heels. Both manage to introduce new color combos and fabrics into the mix while continuing some of their more failsafe style trends, from men’s shirts to women’s skirts to reversible outerwear.

“We touch a little bit into the classics and we also have some kind of new age ‘hip’ design, so we’re trendy but we are still catering to the, you know, the 45, 55, 65-year-old golfers who know what they like,” said sales rep Tommy Scott while he took Golf Tips on a comprehensive tour of both men’s and women’s apparel at the PGA Show. “They [tend to] look at the same type of stuff all the time, and you want to keep up with the true golf game.”

Yes, but Antigua also excels at introducing modern materials into their classic recipes, especially in men’s shirts — the latest polyester weaves for moisture wicking and out-of-the-suitcase wearability, spandex for stretch, splashes of cotton for old-school comfort … even something that Scott called “holographic plastic that moves with you” while pointing to the shirt he had on. “I’ve worn some of these shirts 15 times and they still looks sharp and like they just came out of the box.”

Spring styles for the guys include “Exchange,” which integrates a fashion flat knit collar smoothly into a tonal top portion of the chest. It uses this season’s darker fashion shades (lots of comforting blues, mild teals and salmon) in the upper body and sleeves with a seasonal accent-to-white-to-heather-grey neutral hombre stripe. The fabric blend includes spandex for maximum comfort and stretch.

“Liquid” (a classic pique polo) and “Aerial” (supple poly-spandex) share two main brighter colors, with various striping widths and degrees of iridisence. The latter has eight color combos in all. “Unite,” meanwhile, employs multicolor end-on-end stripes intermittently paired, in five color mixes.

In all, Antigua’s spring lineup shows an emphasis on engineering styles with very cool and rich chest placement accent designs — five uniquely designed garments with patterns that, again, latch on to current trends and manage to break some new ground.

Scott echoed that philosophy as he made his way through a host of sporty women’s jerseys, skirts, skorts, sweaters and vests and a few examples of Antigua’s outstanding men’s items — the lines that keep his clients coming back for more.

“Most of my customers will mix in a couple of our essential new styles because the price point’s great and we have the cool trending stuff, but we’ve got kind of simple and classic ones for golfers who are less fashion forward and want to feel comfortable. Really the line is just diverse. There’s so much for everybody.”

A focus on innovation, premium performance fabrics, superior comfort, and new color stories elevates quality and visual continuity across Ping Apparel’s new Spring-Summer ’18 collections for men and women.

One key addition is Tekfit Technology, which provides up to two additional inches of waistband stretch in select garments to improve freedom and range of movement. It’s found in two new men’s shorts — the Hendrick and the Bradley — and in the ladies’ Livia skort.

The SS18 collection carries on with its Sensor Technology Platform – SensorWarm, SensorCool, and SensorDry – clothing custom-engineered to perform from base layer to outer layer to meet the demands of golf.

On the men’s side, The Elliott blends polyester CoolMax, and elastane, resulting in full comfort for all-weather climates and temperatures. A new polo, the Harvey, is constructed with a unique peached fabric with a very soft and quiet hand. This space-dyed polo also features a concealed button-down collar and a three-button grown-on placket. A new baby pique fabric is featured in the Quinn polo while the Connor uses the same peachy feel of the Harvey. The Karsten II is made of a premium fabric blend of polyester, tencel and elastane. In outerwear, the Delta is an ultralight, full-stretch, 100 percent windproof jacket (the Nyla in the ladies line). This truly engineered jacket features stretch-mesh lining, back venting, and angled vents to the side panels. The Truman is a lightweight stretch quarter-zip with a ribbed inner collar for interest and features 50+ UPF sun protection.

With its ladies collection, Ping Apparel enables golfers to integrate premium, elevated sportswear with her everyday wardrobe. The line balances performance, style and comfort with classic looks. New collar silhouettes play with tradition in a feminine and relaxed look. Attributes include sophisticated and simple color blocking, overlapped and crossover details, back detailing, and minimal abstraction prints using soft geometrics and subtle textures. Two new polos, the Sienna and the sleeveless Dee, feature the CoolMax fabric constructed of poly CoolMax, poly and elastane. A new peached poly fabric is featured in the Beau polo and a new, three-quarter sleeve style called the Cora. In bottoms, PING Apparel added two colors to the popular Adele pull-on stretch pant, and the Livia skort includes Tekfit stretch waistband technology. Two new lightweight spring merino-wool sweaters highlight the layering options.

devereux 2018 shirt

devereux 2018 shirt“It takes a unique blend of performance and style to craft the ultimate in Proper Threads,” Devereux says on its web site.  “A combination of cut and comfort designed to move how you move and live how you live. From design and fabric to buttons, collars, seams and stitches, we put everything into our collection so you can get the most out of it.”

Indeed they do. Skewed toward younger golfers with just enough classic design elements to keep more “established” players in its orbit, Devereux finds its own sweet spots in patterns and fabrics, taking a decided tack toward what we’ll call a “refined resort” sensibility. In fact its new spring line is playfull dubbed “Last Resort,” insinuating that its lineup of button-down and polo shirts, trousers and shorts might indeed be your colorful, trade wind-scented final destination in the ongoing search for the perfect 21st century golf duds. Devereux is based in the Sonoran desert of Phoenix but takes its cues from your better golf outposts around the world, including Hawaii.

Cases in point are its “Lux-Tech” jersey polos. The Kona Polo is available in dark and light floral patterns of moisture-wicking, breathable performance stretch while the Arizona Polo features micro cactus print and is lightweight and quick-dry. The Monstera Polohas its own subtle tropical floral print in an anti-microbial fabric to keep you not only feeling fresh and clean, but actually fresh and clean

Heading below the waist, Devereux’s Gravity Pantsare available in colors like Mojave, Graphite, and Tidal — lightweight, quick dry, performance stretch knit fabric with a bonded back zipper and adjustable ankle zipper. The Cruiser Hybrid Shortscomes in Graphite, Khaki, Steel, Tidal, and Tropic Camo, again in quick dry/hybrid stretch knit fabric with mesh pocket for land to water wear.

ANTIGUA

ANOTHER STELLAR ANTIGUA ‘PERFORMANCE’ FOR MEN…

Coming off of two very strong years for the Antigua Performance Collections, the Antigua Design Team had a tough hill to climb in matching and exceeding the creativity and popularity of those lines. Looks like they’ve succeeded with the Spring 2016 Performance Collection for Men featuring heathers, prints, new silhouettes, amazing fabrications and strong mid -weight outerwear. The line reflects current trends taking shape in fashion, from couture to ready-to-wear. The palette influence has swung from the previous season’s electrified brights to up-to-date and simplistic bright primary color. “Envision the austere geometrics of Mondrian or a Rubik’s Cube,” says Sean Gregg, vice president of product development and marketing support. “Stripped down to the base colors themselves, they’re bright red, yellow, green, royal and purple. But infused into performance fabrics accompanied with blocks, stripes or textures of neutrals and complementing hues, they become so vividly fresh and fun that renaming the colors to Fire, Sunburst, Verdant, Hypnotic and Mardi Gras is more indicative of their current fashion status.” Antigua’s latest styles complement the color direction: Clean to their core. The dominant styling details — especially a refined heather pattern that shows up in accents if not as the garment’s main element — mirror the momentum that fashion giants and forecasters put in motion for this season. The men’s collection includes both of of Antigua’s state-of-the-art moisture-wicking technologies, Desert Dry and Desert Dry Xtra-Lite. These fabrics have been specially engineered to be lightweight while not being overly sheer thanks to ultra-fine yarns that give fabric more body while not dramatically increasing the weight.

…AND WOMEN

The Spring 2016 Women’s Performance Collection reveals fantastic fabrications that combine polyester and spandex, unique prints, color palettes that include beautiful jewel tones and the continuation of successful silhouettes. This full collection emphasizes light to mid-weight overtops, plus a strong use of heathers through the assortment of polos and sheerless polos. All fabrics and silhouettes have been LPGA Tour-tested. “During the development of the Spring 2016 collection, I felt a desire to be more conservative with styling and therefore spent my time focusing on fabrication,” says Danielle Dellios, head of women’s design at Antigua. “The activewear marketplace has reached its threshold and consumers are inundated with product offerings. Every brand has its version of ‘ath-leisure’ clothing, so it was up to our design team to create something unique. I found myself wanting to refine the overall look of the collection by eliminating any trend-specific details and keep styling at a minimum. By doing so, the collection evolved into something more sophisticated and classic.” For example, style Element is traditional in its appearance but features an ultra-soft polyester/spandex irregular heather fabric that gives it a higher value look. Pure is Antigua’s first basic solid polo in years. It’s an ultra-soft poly/spandex fabric, with basic styling details such as bust darts and angled side seams. In keeping with the minimalist approach, styles like Strive have very basic details, including an open placket and self-fabric collar, but with a nylon/poly/spandex tonal mini-stripe fabric that’s not only super soft, but is also cool to the touch. Geometric patterns remain strong, so styles Radical, Ascent, Modern and Champ emerged — each featuring a version of abstract triangle prints. Radical and Champ are both white body styles with a pop of color, whereas Modern and Ascent are color body styles with tonal variations of the print. As for colors, those primary jewel tones are paired with black and white throughout the collection.

DEVEREUX

Devereux calls itself “an innovator in proper-fitting men’s golf and resort clothing,” and after checking out its line at the PGA Show, it’s tough to refute the assertion. These threads are squarely in the sleek and simple design vein, perfect for today’s up-and-coming Millennial player. One such stick from that generation, PGA Tour star Danny Lee, has chosen Devereux as his official apparel partner for 2016. Lee, widely hailed as a rising star and “one of the top golfers to watch” this year, began donning Devereux’s Spring 2016 collection of finely crafted, proper-fitting attire at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in January, and hasn’t looked back. “I am excited to join a stylish team like Devereux,” said Lee. “They offer an unbeatable blend of cutting-edge looks and high-quality apparel that functions great on the course and looks just as good off of it as well.” Added Will Brunner, director of operations, “Danny is a tremendous competitor and one of those rare players who truly has a great understanding of his personal style. He possesses a charisma both on and off the course that aligns perfectly with our brand and we are excited to have someone of his caliber representing Devereux.” Based in Scottsdale,Devereux offers men “Proper Threads” with unparalleled style and comfort on and off the course.

SUNICE OUTERWEAR

Golf Tips’ editors have been packing Sunice products into their bags for road trips for many years now, right alongside folks like the 2015 International Presidents Cup Team and other high-level pro and amateur competitors. Always at the comfortable and colorful intersection of style and performance, Sunice’s spring 2016 line is no exception. Divided into five categories of overlapping protection — Rain, Wind, Thermal, Layering and Sportswear — the array of smartly colored garments just beg to be worn in the wildest, most changeable climate you can think of — which pretty much defines much of America’s winter and spring weather — and leave you perfectly dry and warm with every swing. At the top of the line are several Gore-Tex designs that are fully waterproof, while the FlexVent and Zephal fabric technologies offer whatever level of water and wind-fighting layering you need. We particularly love the Berlin waterproof stretch short-sleeve pullover, about as versatile and movement-friendly piece of performance outerwear as you’ll find. All styles have been updated with new color combinations. Sunice Berlin Waterproof stretch short sleeve pullover line, for instance, has three new color combinations including the new Toxic and Midnight.

GALVIN GREEN

You might not recognize the name at first glance, but European company Galvin Green is one of the top golf apparel designers in the world. Last summer they signed a deal to outfit the next two European Ryder Cup teams in waterproof outerwear, and this year the rest of us get a glimpse of their top-quality offerings via the Art of Performance Part II collection. Each garment in the collection is created to work as part of the brand’s Multi-Layer Concept — the sport’s first apparel layering system. This approach uses leading-edge fabric technologies for maximum playability while providing dry comfort, thermal regulation and outer protection. Combine that with subtle but functional design elements such as rounded cuts that prevent water from seeping in during certain golf moves — crouching to line up a putt or mark your ball, for instance — and suddenly Galvin Green gets the recognition it deserves. And they also help you plan for weather several days out throughs their new Dress for the Weather app. Free on the App Store or Google Play, it provides detailed five-day forecasts for thousands of courses in the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and Europe, and recommends ideal layering solutions for expected levels of heat, precipitation and wind speed. galvingreen.com

ZENSAH

If you’re not compressing, you’re stressing. We’re talking the lower leg, those smaller muscles up and down the calf that, after 18 holes of hills, can cramp like nobody’s business, especially for those of us over a certain age. So why not stock up on some Zensah Tech+ compression socks or leg sleeves? They both help support the calf and shin, improve circulation and engender quicker recovery from every kind of workout, on or off the course. “With the sleeve, you’re getting all the compression benefits, but it’s easier [for some people than the socks],” said one Zensah representative at the PGA Show. “Our sleeves have pinpoint compression, different nettles in each area, which separates us from the competition.” You can wear the sleeves to walk, wear them to bed while you’re dreaming about those birdies, and on and on. Zensah also has sleeves for the elbows. All sleeves have 50 UV protection, too. The best bet? A pair of low-profile socks and sleeves, plus the high-profile socks for all-in-one protection. KENTWOOL GOLF SOCKS

Is there anything more important to a stem-to-stern comfortable round of golf than happy feet? We think not, and that’s why we’re longtime fans of Kentwool golf socks. We’ve slid the South Carolina-based company’s Merino wool wares on our dogs for every kind of weather, in every kind of cut — from low-profile anklet to knee-high compression models — and have never failed to appreciate their comfort, fit and durability. Apparently the world’s top caddies join us in that sentiment (and who needs great footwear more than a caddy?). Recently the Association of Professional Tour Caddies partnered with Kentwool to provide member loopers with their top-of-the-line socks. A few caddies even took the time to talk up the partnership in Kentwool’s PGA Show booth — singing the praises of their natural “smart” fiber, which remains unmatched for comfort and performance. Every model of sock draws upon wool’s natural wicking and cooling properties for moisture management, sheer comfort and other performance enhancing benefits. They’ve developed new lines of socks including the Game Day collection of colors that represent college football teams around the country. Rabid fans snapped them up and now the company is releasing them to the public this spring. They’ve also come out with new wool-based boxer short and T-shirt lines that riff off the products they provide to the U.S. government, especially soldiers. Boo-rah! kentwool.com

NICKLAUS

The Fall 2016 Jack Nicklaus Collection is going back to the roots of golf in Scotland—inspired by Jack’s great sense of style during the 1978 Open at St. Andrews and the beautiful sunsets over the Old Course. The color palette is comprised of navy, royal and steel blues, red and white for the Americana-inspired vignette, and a sunset vignette, which features vivid purples and teals anchored by black, with touches of bright green. The collection is always grounded with navy and base neutrals, such as grey and camel. “The Majors” — the performance, on-course inspired part of the line — is comprised of short-sleeve polos, featuring Coolplus quick-dry yarns with moisture wicking, and four-way stretch fabrics designed to keep the wearer cool and comfortable. In keeping with golf fashion’s overall spring trend, heather looks are important to the collection, as they make big statements for a more techie look that is still grounded in the classics. Long-sleeve polos and base layer quarter-zips have performance attributes, such as four-way stretch and inside brushing for an added level of warmth. High performance outerwear pieces like the Mixed Media Full Zip Jacket, with a high-density knit fabric, offer a 360-degree range of motion. The Hooded Full Zip Jacket is a great on-course water resistant piece with a removable hood and ventilation for comfort. The 19th Hole collection features both luxurious double-mercerized cotton and performance cotton knits that keep the wearer cool and dry, on and off the course. The Bear’s Best Woven Shirts feature wrinkle-free 100 percent cotton twill fabrics, with a great hand feel. Traditional patterns in unexpected colorations have become a trademark to the line. The new quarter-zip windstopper sweater is one of the “must have” pieces of the season. jacknicklausapparel.com

BIRDIE BALL

Birdie Ball is one of those successful companies that has carved out its very own niche in the golf world. Their catalog of play-the-game-anywhere products aren’t ostensibly for kids alone, but they certainly appeal to the kid in all of us, from huge blowup mini-golf style creatures (think dino or hippo’s mouth instead of clown’s mouth) to portable “golf bounce houses” to the very well-respected limited-distance ball. Their giant plastic clubs are definitely for kids, while six- and nine-hole target sets make the game truly fun for the rankest beginner. Even Birdie Ball’s newest product, an indoor putting green, is different from myriad others out there. It even feels like real grass on your feet, and as with natural grass surfaces, the ball — limited flight or otherwise — reacts as it should, with no wobble, rolling on the flat, spongy sublayer, while the “nubby” top layer controls the speed. You choose the thickness, width, length and Stimp speed, and Birdie Ball will create to your specs. It’s the real deal. Starting at about $75 birdieball.com

GOLPHIN

What do you get when lad named Calum McPherson, the scion of a Scottish foundry — who just happens to be an outstanding professional and amateur golfer — decides to do his part to grow the game he loves so much? You get a cutting edge set of clubs designed exclusively for kids. You get Golphin Ltd. Recognized for its outstanding concept and designs — including oversized, precision-crafted irons that instill confidence from the first swing — Golphin debuted in 2014 and immediately racked up two prestigious awards in its home country and China. And now they’re coming to America and available online and in retail shops. McPherson got the idea for Golphin after watching his son struggle with cut-down clubs, and having set a goal to make golf more enjoyable for juniors. Designed to benefit children ages three through 11, they were developed in partnership with PGA Professionals and the biomechanical department at Strathclyde University, in Glasgow, using technology transfer from the aerospace industry. They are 22 percent lighter and 35 percent larger than most junior golf clubs, making it easier for players to swing, control and hit. A radial profile was added to the sole of the clubs to provide greater forgiveness for differing lie angles and to accommodate children’s various address positions and heights. The GFK line of Golphin product selections is based on the height of each individual child. The Golphin Coaches Pack, designed for teaching professionals to provide equipment for potential new golfers at clinics and lessons, consists of 14 clubs: four high-loft drivers, six 7 irons, two “Swedgers” and two putters – including several left-handed clubs. Individual GFK sets include one driver, one 7 iron, one “Swedger” and one putter. golphin.com

We became fans of anything that makes our dogs more comfortable — including compression socks — after too many walking rounds at hilly venues like Bandon Dunes in Oregon. Traipsing over the terrain in search of your wayward ball — and hopefully getting in some good shots here and there — takes its toll on the middle-aged calves and quads. Enter German company CEP’s new line of low-profile and calf-length (or “no show” and “short” in their parlance) compression socks, which come to America with medical-grade bona fides. Traditionally used by runners and triathletes, they’ve recently been embraced by athletes across the sports spectrum and now, with CEP’s newest short and no-show line, by people that prefer lower profile designs.

So why compression socks that don’t cover the lower leg, like traditional designs? Because the benefits of properly-applied compression go much further than circulation just below the knee. They help massage and contain muscles in the foot itself and push swelling fluid out of the Plantar complex in the arch, especially the front part of the heel — a trouble area among walking golfers. And due to the snug ergonomic profile of the sock, CEP socks will never rub or cause blistering – perfect for long rounds on the course, or even the occasional 36-hole blowout. Our testing bore this out; thanks to strategically placed extra padding on the sole and a uniformly snug fit from toe to top seam, both new CEP models kept us moving down each fairway without foot fatigue or the faintest mention of pain. As any aging hacker will attest, happy feet lead to lower scores … and a much more enjoyable round. They are offered in three sizes each for men and women, based on the circumference of your ankle at its narrowest point. Keep an extra pair or two of your preferred length sock your bag (including the available knee-high model if you so desire), and you’ll never be caught short.

Prizm Sunglasses | $170-$240

To play well, you have to do more than just read the green. You need to spot the transitions between the fairway, fringe and rough. You have to gauge distance with accuracy, and you need a good eye for grass textures. Prizm golf lenses help golfers with all these things and more. They filter precise, narrow bands of color so you can spot grass textures you might miss otherwise, and improve contrast between the cyans and greens of healthy grass and the yellows, oranges and reds of unhealthy grass. By separating shades of green, the Prizms help you spot fairway/fringe/rough transitions. The separation of colors gives you more depth cues to gauge distance for wedge shots, and when you’re on the green, you can easily differentiate grass conditions and grain direction. The Prizms are available in Flak Jacket, Flak Jacket XL 2.0, Half Jacket XL 2.0, Radar EV Pitch and RadarLock Path styles.
