DIALING FOR DETAILS
So we went to work with a variety of 7-iron heads and two types of steel shaft — no graphite, as they, being lighter, tend to hit the ball even higher.
- First up: Callaway Apex with an Elevate 95-S shaft.
- Second: TaylorMade P790 with a Dynamic Gold 105 S300 shaft
- Third: Mizuno JPX 919 Forged, first with the same Dynamic Gold, then with the KBS C-Taper Lite S shaft
- Fourth: Ping i500, also with those two shafts
I was amazed at how different each stick felt through the swing and at impact.
All had their pluses and minuses — far more pluses. You’ve really got to work at it to find a sub-standard modern iron, whether cast or forged. Materials, designs and tolerances are so good and so tight that, in truth, you can get away with off-the-rack sticks. But none of us, not one darned person is “off the rack.”
We’re unique, and so are our swings, which makes guys like Eaton so indispensable. They are the piano tuners of golf, helping us eliminate sour notes up and down the keyboard — or, in our case, through the bag.
