Blast Motion 360

Blast Motion 360By now most golfers are familiar with all types of game-tracking gizmos that rely on a Bluetooth connection between a club-mounted transmitter — most of them screw into the small hole on the end of a club’s grip — and a smart phone or tablet app. Blast Motion Golf 360 is part of that family, consist-ing of a small, round device that attaches quickly to whatever club you’re swinging, but that’s where its similarity to most other products ends.

Sure, it’ll measure bedrock stuff like face angle, loft and lie, rotation — nine metrics altogether that offer an almost instantaneous picture of where you’re motion is, and where it needs to go. But in one area in particular — tempo — it’s far and away the coolest such gadget we’ve seen. Bill Andrews, a teaching pro and occasional competitive golfer from Connecticut, agrees whole-heartedly. In fact, he’s such a Blast Motion believer that he volunteered to help the company explain and demo the product to teaching pros at the PGA Show. A small putting surface and a mounted iPad is all he needed to make his point as one golfer after another gave it a shot to see how close their putting stroke came to a numerical ideal that the Blast Motion developers and discovered after deep and revealing research. “I’ve been using it for a year,” he told Golf Tips.

“It’s for putting, chipping or full swing.” In the data-base they have one and a half million putting strokes of Tour players, and what they’ve gathered from their input is that the backstroke time is twice as long as the through-stroke. I’ve been out to their lab in Cali-fornia. They’re MIT guys, a bit ‘out there,’ but they’ve done some great work. “Think of this: You’ve played with a guy who just buried a really good putt and you’ve said, ‘that’s a great stroke.’ So what makes it great? Well, a putting stroke takes .9 seconds, a full swing a full second. That’s no mystery. But the perfect stroke is always .6 to .3 seconds, backstroke to forward stroke.” In other words, no matter how long the putt or the stroke to match it, the perfect rhythm of a pro-level stroke is always .3 seconds or a multiple of it going back, .6 or a multiple going forward and through. And Blast Motion will show whether you’re in the ballpark in just one stroke.

“It’s so simple to use,” Andrews said, adding that the “Blast Connect” cloud-based platform turns the product into a long-distance teaching aid. “The sensor is good for eight hours, it attaches to the end of the putter. You open the Golf Blast app, it comes up and recognizes the sensor. You can click on the camera and film the swing, and all the met-rics are right there with the swing. Someone can video their stroke, send it to me and I can work with them from 1,500 miles away.” It works for pitching, chipping and full swing, too. Andrews is such an adherent that he sells them to his fellow pros and many students, and many other teachers get into the reselling program, too. “This thing is [less than] $200; pros can pay for it the first lesson they do, because most likely the guy who’s taking the lesson is going to buy one, and you’ll make 50 bucks.” So, Blast Motion sells itself, but the proof is in the feedback Andrews con-tinues to get on his own stroke. “I hit a lot of balls, I play pretty well, so I might not need it as much as a lot of amateurs, but where it really helps me is with pitching and chipping, that motion,” he said. “For most players, it’sm best for putting. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t want to putt better. I knew I had to hit 16 or 17 greens to shoot in the 60s because I didn’t know what I was doing on the green. Now I spend more time on the putting green, and it’s showing.”

SCI-COR-PRACTICE-BALL copy

Sci-Cor Practice Golf Ball

Safe indoors and outdoors, the newly released Sci-Core practice golf ball is designed as a solution for golfers who want a realistic feel and result wherever they have enough space to swing a club.

On the practice range, inside the living room, or out in the backyard, the bright orange Sci-Core practice golf ball is a great solution for practice virtually anywhere.

The Sci-Core “real feel” practice golf ball is the heaviest practice ball on the market at 20.5 grams (0.72 ounces) – roughly half of a regulation golf ball. It is this extra weight that provides a “real feel” and allows for a maximum flight of 130 yards on full swings. Yet, with its condensed, patent-pending polymer foam construction, the Sci-Core ball also floats on water for easy retrieval.

The Sci-Core ball has a durable non-marking glossy cover, with a traditional dimple pattern for accurate flight characteristics. It is designed for extensive use, retains its shape, and will not crack over time. It’s so soft it won’t break a glass window and the cover does not leave scuff marks.

Developed by the creators of the Swing Coach Club training aid, the Sci-Core “real feel” practice golf ball is available in a six-pack for $14.95 and comes with a lifetime warranty.

tour-edge-exotics-e10-driver-990x556

The 2017 PGA Merchandise Show, or PGA Show for short, brought the golf industry’s biggest players in equipment and apparel to the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida for a week of product debuts, special events and game-growth seminars and initiatives, and Golf Tips was there not only to collect new instruction content for the coming year, but to check out the latest and greatest in gear. Here’s a final rundown of some product highlights.

TOUR EDGE EXOTICS

tour-edge-exotics-e10-driver-990x556Tour Edge Golf probably is best known for its Exotics line of fairway woods – they’re among the best in the industry.

The company’s new EX10 driver could be the driver that finally is the fairway woods’ equal. Debuting at the show, the EX10 adjustable driver, Tour Edge says, features a lighter-weight 8-1-1 titanium chassis and new Japanese TSP Beta Ti thinner face for better forgiveness and distance.

A 10- and 12-degree head is available with a new hosel system that doubles the adjustability options, allowing players to raise or lower the loft +/- two degrees.

Additional weight screws can be purchased as a kit or individually. The kit includes six- gram, 12-gram and 14-gram weights to increase or decrease the swing weight.

Perhaps best of all, the EX10 driver has a suggested retail price of $349.99, around $200 less than many of its high-performance competitors.

MYSWING GOLF

swingcoachMySwing Golf, Inc., a full-body 3D motion capture analysis system for the golf swing showed off its new MySwing Trainer. The product (suggested retail price $999) will be released at the end of the first quarter.

The company says the new MySwing Trainer is an affordable 3D golf training tool that helps grow the revenue stream for  teaching professionals.  With fast set-up, the company says pros spend more time teaching and have the ability to instruct multiple students simultaneously.   The MySwing Trainer can set to any angle, tilt or rotation and operate with two or five sensors capturing specific movement with the pelvis and ribcage, left arm, and right arm.

“The goal with MySwing Trainer is to provide teaching pros with a rapid ROI and a system that pays for itself in a short time frame through player self-training,” said Curt Wieden, director of marketing at MySwing Golf.  “Students will enjoy the challenge of achieving specific training goals and will experience faster improvement through repetition of correct motions.  Pros can set the system to specific ranges to train anyone from the weekend warrior to the tour professional.”

PUMA GOLF

pumaapparel-rickiePUMA Golf’s Spring/Summer 2017 apparel collection is grounded in a material story it calls “Utralite, a product is up to 30 percent lighter than prior generation, ensuring “a new level’’ of comfort.

Puma says the fabric is breathable, offers excellent moisture management and is minimally constructed for a cleaner look.  Ultralite is used in Puma Golf’s men’s and women’s selections in polos, bottoms, and outerwear.

In Spring Summer ’17, PUMA Golf is introducing a completely revamped men’s bottoms collection.  The company says the new pants offer excellent moisture management, new, improved fit, a rebalanced pattern, curved waistband for comfort and mechanical stretch for maximum range of motion. The pants are available in both a tailored and performance fit.

PING SIGMA G PUTTER

pinganser-sigma-putterA multi-piece face technology inspired by the soles of athletic shoes and advancements to Ping’s True Roll Face Technology have led to what the company calls “significant improvements’’ in feel and overall putting performance in the new Ping Sigma G putter models.

“The Sigma G putters represent an exciting new technology that continues our long-standing commitment to engineering putters that feel and look great but perform even better,” said Ping Chairman John A. Solheim. “The combination of the high-grade elastomer and fully machined aerospace-grade aluminum over the entire face delivers an amazing feel and sound. And with improved ball-speed consistency and forgiveness, golfers will make more putts than ever’’

Solheim said the Pebax elastomer, a material commonly used in the soles of athletic shoes for its elasticity properties, is a lightweight, high-energy return compound that delivers a soft yet responsive feel. The new True Roll Face Technology covers the entire face to provide confidence and full-face forgiveness.

Impact stability in every Sigma G model, according to Solheim, is increased as a result of the larger face insert cavities that allow weight savings to be re-distributed farther toward the perimeter to increase the MOI (Moment of Inertia. Optimally placed CG (Center of Gravity) positions help reduce skid and initiate forward roll.

A variety of blades, mid-mallets and mallets are available including Ping’s classic Anser design. Blade-style putters will carry a suggested retail price of $195; Mallet-style $215; and Counter-balanced $235.

TUNGSTEN SOLE WEIGHT Lowers center of gravity to increase launch angle. OPTIMIZED SOLE CAMBER Improves turf interaction and control from all lies. MASS IN IMPACT AREA Maintains a solid, muscle back blade-like feel and provides workability on center and close-to-center impacts.

The PGA Merchandise Show rolls through the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida through Jan. 27, and Golf Tips is here with the scoop on the latest in equipment, training aids, apparel and more. Every day this week we’ll feature new products that catch our fancy and deserve a look from you, too.

Wilson FG Tour V6 Irons

Wilson Golf often doesn’t get the recognition as its larger competitors, but that doesn’t diminish its products, particularly its irons, on display here at the PGA Merchandise Show’s Demo Day and all week long at the main show, Jan. 25-27..

The company’s FG Tour V6 irons (suggested retail price $999.99 for 3-PW) is testament to Wilson’s iron heritage with modern technology. Wiclson says the V6 irons combines playability with Tungsten sole technology to control miss hits.

While the FG Tour V6 is a cavity-back design forged from 8620 steel throughout, Wilson says the design uses multiple materials to create better performance, the most significant being 20 grams of tungsten weight in the middle and long irons that help add more perimeter weighting for better feel and forgiveness.

The short iron (8-PW) do not have the added tungsten weights.

newbalanceNew Balance Shoes

If you’re looking for a good alternative to the golf footwear big boys, consider New Balance. Best known for its running shoes, the company has made good strides (pardon the pun) in the golf shoe market.

New Balance is here at the PGA Merchandise Show to show off its new golf shoe line, including the NBG2004 high-performance, lightweight athletic-style cleated shoe that features a waterproof microfiber upper and REVLite midsole designed for comfort.

New Balance says the NBG2004 is built on the new PW-1 last that has a wider forefoot that allows the toes to spread out for balance, while the lower instep height helps the foot stay connected to the ground, which improves overall feel and power. The waterproof microfiber leather upper has an ultralight FantomFit support and a welded form-fitted tongue construction.

golfstr-6-swing-fixes

golfstr-6-swing-fixes GOLFSTR

Bill Curry had had enough. Three decades of marginal golf had seeped into his soul and threatened his love for the game, so he got a lesson and discovered the biggest bugaboo in his swing: A bent left arm going back, which robbed him of power and caused a decided out-to-in motion. Simple, right? And common, too. But discovery and maintenance are two different things. Curry couldn’t cure that swing fault on his own so he set out to design a training aid that would keep his arm straight and knock strokes off his card. Three years later he had the Golfstr — a small, curved, clear plastic device with one end bent at a roughly 30 degree angle. By strapping it to his upper forearm with the bent end pushing against his lower bicep, he got immediate feedback when the arm broke down. The improvement was immediate and gratifying. But that’s not the end of the story. Once Curry put Golfstr into production and showed it to a few teaching pros, they almost immediately came up with five more swing-straightening functions, simply by switching arms, changing positions on either arm and altering the direction of the bent end inward or outward. For instance, by moving Golfstr to the trailing bicep and placing the end just below the elbow, you’ll achieve a perfect 90-degree “lag” angle going back. Move it further down the same arm and the bent end will prevent too much wrist break during full shot and chip shot takeaway, while the same set-up on the leading arm (with the end bent outward instead of inward) will prevent that nasty “flip” in the chip or pitch follow-through — with the same stable-wrist effect for putting practice, too. Our favorite is the 90-degree lag set-up, but testing found us strike the ball with more accuracy and consistency through the bag. And we love the fact that it’ll fit in a trouser pocket, and that it comes with a removable and versatile rubber tip that helps solidify contact between gadget and arm or wrist. Now Golfstr has attracted the notice of some big-name teachers, and rightly so. It’s a winner.

swingclickplus-2-hrSWING CLICK PLUS

We first caught sight (and sound) of this nifty, simple gadget at the 2016 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, and have since had a chance to check it out during practice sessions, both during rehearsal swings and while actually hitting balls on the range — in fact, there’s nothing holding you back from using it during a casual round. The premise is simple and the feedback immediate: You just strap the ballpoint pen-sized SwingClick to your lead forearm, being careful to line up the device with the center-back of your hand (between the middle and third finger), begin taking normal-sized swings, and the auditory cues and clues start coming. It makes a clicking sound at the three main junctures of a swing — at the top, at impact and at follow-through — that is, if your rhythm is as smooth as you’d like it to be. With some intent practice, you’ll find yourself slowing down your takeaway, taking that all-important mini-pause just before beginning the downswing, and letting the club pull your arms and torso through to the target. If you’re jerky or quick at any point, you won’t hear the vital click. The upshot of this immediate feedback? Muscle memory, a much better transition and better overall rhythm. The Swing Click Plus works with any club but particularly well with irons since the angle of attack is a bit steeper. And the new Plus’s sleeker design and more adjustable strap makes it truly one-size-fits-all. It now comes in four colors, too, and slides easily into your bag so you can keep that newly ingrained tempo going as needed when on the links As carry-along training aids go, this one is a winner.

setuptrainer_action4-lorezSET-UP TRAINER

It’s one thing to get the PGA Tour’s longest driver (no, not Dustin Johnson) to endorse your products, but it’s another when the products he endorses are so clearly and, again, simply, effective: Hence we have Tony Finau, that young, big, friendly, nearly-silent murder of the golf ball, doing video spots for SKLZ golf’s lineup of golf-specific products, including the Set-Up Trainer — the type of item you’ve always told yourself would come in handy when you’re working out some issues on the practice tee, but couldn’t quite conjure a mental picture of what that item is. So we’ve got the picture: a four-foot-long slab of plastic equipped with a sliding top piece marked with lines delineating every club in the bag, driver through wedge, against which you line up a shorter perpendicular, stationary alignment piece to match the club you’ve grabbed. You then place a ball opposite the center line on the stationary piece. A second set of lines alone your toe line show where to place your feet — wider for woods, narrower for irons, narrower still for wedges. Together those lines instantly put you in perfect ball-striking position for each club. Then you can start hitting balls and adjusting as necessary depending on your personal swing plane and physique, but there’s no guesswork as to the proper starting point. But wait, there’s more: Fold-out bars on either end of the main bar can be placed perpendicular to keep you square, and of course, the whole thing can be adjusted “open” or “closed” to help facilitate a draw or fade relative to the clubface. The Set-Up Trainer works for righties and lefties, and it comes with a nylon storage bag that’ll slide right in with your sticks. By the way, LPGA star Anna Nordqvist is a big fan, too.

hip-striker-copyHIP STRIKER

Is there a more coveted move in the effective golf swing than that instant when the trailing hip fires out toward the ball as the club approaches impact? We doubt it, which is what makes the Hip Striker such a no-brainer for golfers, and all athletes for that matter who want to get those power-packed big muscles in the hips and glutes rotating and into the ballgame big time — soccer, baseball, tennis, you name it. Consisting of a flat, orange plastic paddle-like object and an adjustable strap that attaches around the waist, the well-placed Striker should protrude from the hip at least a 45 degrees from the toeline at address; from there you toss one of three included foam balls — they’re about the size of a baseball — up and in front of you, and try to smack it with the paddle as it’s coming down. That takes rotational speed and coordination, the key combo to blasting the golf ball — not brute strength. As you improve you can move the paddle back to require faster hip firing to hit the ball. It’ll take some practice to start whacking the balls without missing, you might look a little funny doing it and you’ll get more of a workout than you might expect, but who cares when the result is a more synced-up swing, more solid strikes and more yardage down the fairway?

PXG

Arizona-based golf equipment company PXG has introduced its new PXG 0311XF iron collection. Featuring the company’s groundbreaking TPE Core Technology, the new game improvement irons offer xtreme forgiveness and a superior feel, while maintaining the irresistible look of a PXG blade.

In 2015, PXG made an indelible mark on the golf industry with the introduction of its revolutionary iron technology. The original PXG 0311 forged blades have a distinctive design, exceptional feel and unmatched performance. The new PXG 0311XF leverages the same materials and sophisticated manufacturing processes. The club head has a longer blade length, wider sole, and slightly larger profile to help inspire confidence at address and deliver xtreme forgiveness.

“The longer blade length and wider sole help increase the MOI and drive the CG back to create greater forgiveness and more dynamic loft at impact,” said PXG chief product officer Brad Schweigert. “As a result, the clubs are incredibly forgiving and deliver outstanding mis-hit performance.”

“We’d all love to hit the ball perfectly every time, but the truth is many of us don’t,” American businessman and PXG founder Bob Parsons said. “Most players struggle with imperfect swings and for some playing a blade can be intimidating. So, we engineered a game improvement iron that is even more forgiving than the original PXG 0311 irons and just as sexy. Trust me, forgiveness has never felt so good.”

PXG 0311XF irons are triple forged and feature an ultra-thin face coupled with a structural thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) material. The patented technology combines to dampen vibrations and produce a more efficient energy transfer. The large, TPE-filled internal cavity promotes higher ball speeds and increased distance. High-density tungsten alloy weights situate mass for an optimal CG position, resulting in longer more consistent shots. Perimeter weighting also creates PXG’s signature look.

PXG 0311XF irons seamlessly integrate with the entire 0311 series, supporting complete and mixed set makeups. Even elite players with low handicaps may benefit from using a set that blends from PXG 0311XF irons to the original PXG 0311 or PXG 0311T mid and short irons.

“I love my PXG 0311XF 4-iron,” said 15-time worldwide champion Charl Schwartzel. “Off the tee I hit it 260 yards and when someone looks in my bag it blends perfectly with my 0311 irons. You would never know that it’s a game improvement club – and I like that.”

PXG now offers three collections engineered for golfers at every level of the game. The PXG 0311T (Tour Performance Collection) is for tour pros and the very best golfers. The PXG 0311T features a smaller more compact head and less offset. The PXG 0311 (Players Collection) is the company’s original iron and accommodates the widest range of golfing skill. It has a larger head and a bit more offset, providing forgiveness where you need it and performance where you want it.

All three iron collections are priced at $350 per club. The entire PXG 0311 series is available in Chrome and, for an additional $150 per iron, Xtreme Dark, a black Diamond-like Carbon (DLC) coating.

Cameron Crown Putter Profile

The new line of Cameron & Crown putters by Scotty Cameron offers four of Scotty’s most-trusted models precisely crafted at 33 inches and specifically weighted for players whose setup demands a shorter putter.

Cameron Crown Putter ProfileAvailable in U.S. golf shops beginning Sept. 23, Cameron & Crown putters deliver the craftsmanship, quality and tour-proven performance that have made Scotty Cameron putters the choice of many of the world’s best players for more than two decades:

  • Each Cameron & Crown putter is custom designed at 33 inches and matched with properly weighted heads and new smaller diameter white Matador grips. This configuration ensures correct swing weight, providing optimal feel and balance throughout the putting stroke.
  • From modern blade to high-MOI mallet, Cameron & Crown models are available in four of Scotty’s most popular head shapes — Select Newport 2, Select Newport M2 Mallet, GOLO 5 and Futura X5R — to satisfy the variety of strokes, styles and preferences of players at every level of the game.
  • Multi-material technology — utilizing 303 stainless steel and 6061 aircraft grade aluminum for face inlays, face-sole components and flange constructions — is performance-matched to each putter style to provide ideal forgiveness and feel.
  • A raw stainless steel finish with a unique Silver Mist treatment creates a radiant yet glare resistant appearance. New Cameron & Crown graphics blend Scotty’s familiar three milled dots with an elegant white, gold, silver and black color scheme.

“Each year, I’ve received increasingly more requests – from men, women and juniors – for 33-inch putters,” said Titleist Master Putter Maker Scotty Cameron. “We wanted to call special attention to the importance of weight and length and create a unique offering for those players whose setup dictates a 33-inch putter.”

“When we pioneered the adjustable sole weight system, it became possible to match the putter head weight relative to the length for a balanced stroke,” Cameron said. “Cameron & Crown models are purpose-built 33-inch designs, not manipulated 35-inch putters, with two 20-gram weights to ensure the swing weight and feel of these putters are consistent with their longer counterparts. We then developed a smaller Matador grip to match that performance and feel. These are crucial details when it comes to making a confident stroke.”

MODEL OVERVIEW:

Cameron & Crown Newport 2: Legendary low-slung modern heel-and-toe weighted blade with a plumbing neck, longer angular lines, 303 stainless steel head and face inlay with a flange sight line. The iconic putter model for countless professional tour wins. (Available in both RH and LH configurations.)

MISIG STRETCHING SYSTEM

Fitness-minded golfers are no strangers to resistance bands, those stretchy strands of rubber that help strengthen the body from shoulders to ankles. But The MISIG — which stands for the Most Important Stretch in Golf — is something new, a complete golf performance program that includes a stretching program, swing training program and exercise program designed around one of the most important fundamentals in the golf swing: the takeaway. Consisting of three bands of varying lengths and thicknesses depending on one’s fitness level, which attach to an upper arm band on one end and a sliding, padded handle on the other, the MISIG builds muscle memory and develops a proper takeaway as you slide the handle along a plastic shaft from address to the top of the backswing. By keeping the elbow locked through extension and wrists hinging properly, golfers can develop an increased range of motion, more degrees in the backswing and faster clubhead speed. “There are numerous benefits from stretching and using the Most Important Stretch in Golf,” said inventor and owner, Bernie Fay. “MISIG is a great tool for instructors and rehabilitation specialists as well.” Simply make the MISIG a part of your daily training or warm-up routine by sliding the handle five to six times up the bar per set. You’ll quickly develop stronger golf muscles and avoid injuries due to increased flexibility, loosened tendons and muscles, and improved extension — and also gain a better understanding of the mechanics of the swing, including the proper transition at the top.

DISTANCE CLIPS

So, do you hit the same club the same distance through the years, no matter what? We didn’t think so, which makes these why-didn’t-we-think-of-that Distance Clips such a simple solution to the guesswork of club selection, from long irons through wedges. Each packet contains small nylon clips numbered from 200 to 40 yards in 10-yard increments; after some time on the range hitting each club and dialing in the distance with each, you just snap the appropriate average yardage number onto the shaft of each iron, next to the hosel, where it’s easily visible in the bag. For instance, if you’re knocking the 5-iron 170 yards, match it up with that clip and you’re good to go. If you get fitted for a new set, hone your move via lessons and/or gain more flexibility, chances are you’ll add 7 to 10 yards to each club — so you just swap out the Distance Clip to the new number. Before long the actual club’s number won’t matter. Everything you need to know is right on that clip, and more pars and birdies are sure to follow.
