Golf In France: Four Amazing Places To Play

Golf in France isn’t quite as well-known as in some other European countries. It doesn’t have a particularly significant tournament to its name, and when you look at the countries with the most top quality public courses, France doesn’t tend to be listed among them. However, the country is about to command the spotlight of the golf world in a way it doesn’t in any given year. That’s because it’s hosting the Ryder Cup, a Europe versus America event held every two years at sites that alternate between the United States and Europe. It’s a very fun late-season competition, considered by many fans to be as enjoyable as any other to watch, and it will surely bring fresh attention to the French golf culture.

If you’re heading to the 2018 Ryder Cup Sept. 28-30, or planning a trip to France anytime, here’s a short look at some of the best courses to play throughout the country.

Le Golf National

Shown in the photo above, Le Golf National will host the 2018 Ryder Cup, so naturally it’s the first place to talk about. Consistently rated as one of the best courses in France, it’s located just outside of Paris to the west. Relatively narrow fairways on many holes make it a challenging course for drivers, but it’s also a fun one to navigate. It’s most famous for its “stadium-like” finish, with the final four holes laid out in a sort of natural arena complete with pretty ponds that create atmosphere and obstacles alike.

Les Bordes

There may not be a definitive best course in France, but Les Bordes has as good an argument as any, and has earned the top spot in at least a few rankings. It’s laid out like an old world royal retreat because in some ways that’s just what it was. The area that now makes up the course was a hunting ground for a baron in the Loire Valley south of Paris, and still retains a sort of wild atmosphere – which contrasts with the flawless upkeep of the course itself. It’s a dream-like place to play golf, and wonderfully secluded.

Chantilly

Like Le Golf National, Chantilly is a Paris course, and another of the best to play at in all of France. In some ways it actually mimics Les Bordes in that part of the course was once a royal deer park, but here there is also the added charm of Chateau de Chantilly, which looms directly over the course. A piece specifically about why people should golf in France pointed out that the complex also features a pair of museums, which makes it a nice place to hang out even before or after playing your 18 holes.

Prince de Provence

Located in the beautiful Provence region, Prince de Provence is one of the best golf destinations outside of the Paris area. It’s a lush, gorgeous course, and unfortunately one that’s known largely for its exclusivity — which means you may not get the opportunity to play there. If you do though, it should be treated as an opportunity that can’t be missed.

Osprey Valley Named First TPC Property in Canada

The Toot Course, one of TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley’s three unique layouts, will also be re-named the North Course effective immediately, with the Heathlands and Hoot courses continuing to offer golfers an unparalleled 54-hole experience.

The Osprey Valley Open, an official Mackenzie Tour – PGA Tour Canada event that saw its inaugural playing take place at Osprey Valley in July, will also return in 2019 and beyond, with Mackenzie Tour’s only tournament in the Greater Toronto Area staying as part of a long-term agreement.

The Grande Golf Club is one of Jackson’s top courses. Offering 18 holes of spectacular play, this course will challenge golfers of any skill level. A fairly new club, this Raymond Hearn design does not disappoint for a second. Expect lush forest backdrops while driving down these challenging greens. Features of this club include an award-winning practice facility and driving range, pristine course conditions, and beautiful scenery.

Arbor Hills has been challenging its visitors for almost a century. Designed by Arthur Hamm in 1925, Arbor Hills was once a private club but is now a full-serviced public course. Each of its 18 holes present a different challenge, highlighted by #12, a daunting Par 5 which was once deemed the hardest hole in the county. Arbor Hills comes complete with a 10-acre driving range, putting and chipping practice areas and a fully stocked golf shop.

The Cascades Golf Course has a lot of history behind it, opening all the way back in 1929. Often presented as one of Michigan’s best public clubs. Haig Point: True South Carolina Golf Getaway

Most traveling golfers are familiar with Hilton Head Island, for good reason: It’s one of the top destinations in South Carolina, and indeed the Southeast. But just a short boat ride away, tucked away in a world all its own, is Daufuskie Island and The Haig Point Golf Course.

The Haig Point 20-hole Rees Jones Signature Championship Golf Course maximizes its location, ambling from the Calibogue Sound through lush sea island forests and along wide stretches of pristine salt marsh. While most ocean courses only have two or three holes that touch water, Haig Point has seven tee boxes or greens with ocean views.

First designed in 1986, the course was 20 holes long and designed to bring out the best in the game and golfer. Jones returned to Daufuskie Island in 2007 to restore the greens and sharpen the course’s legacy as one of the best in the nation. The yardage increased from 7,150 to 7,380; increasing the USGA rating.

The Haig Point Signature course has appeared in Golf Digest’s “America’s 100 Greatest Courses” and “Best in State,” and has earned a coveted position in Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 in the World.” On the Signature course, the 8th and 17th holes have two holes to choose from making this a true challenge. Par is 72 on this 74.9 rated course. The Bermuda grass has a slope rating of 142 and can be challenging but is completely worth it.

The 9-hole Osprey course boasts breathtaking surroundings and views. It offers a fast, family-friendly option for those who are new to the game or would like a relaxing round. The Osprey course consists of Bermuda grass and has a rating of 74.9 with a slope rating of 142 with par being 36.

With no bridge to the island, golfers take a 30-minute ride over to Daufuskie Island on the ferry from Hilton Head Island. With no cars on the island, visitors can get around via electric golf cart, bicycle or by foot.

Haig Point and the secluded island around it form a unique slice of the Old South, more than worthy an extra day in the Hilton Head region — and, if you’re so inclined, a lifetime of primary or second home ownership. The closes international airport is Savannah, less than an hour’s drive away.

Pinehurst No. 4 To Reopen September 20

Pinehurst Resort & Country Club will unveil a completely reimagined Pinehurst No. 4 course on Sept. 20, the work of renowned golf course architect Gil Hanse.

Visually stunning from tee to green, exposed sand areas, vast cross bunkers and native wire grass meld with the site’s rolling topography and natural ridge lines to create dramatic vistas and strategic options on every hole. Hanse’s design of Pinehurst No. 4 is a brand new and bold expression of pure, timeless Carolinas Sandhills golf.

“We’ve returned the original landscape to the course, and from there, we then created the features, slopes and green locations,” says Hanse, architect of the 2016 Olympic Course in Rio de Janeiro. “We believe golfers are going to appreciate how No. 4 fits into the Pinehurst lineup and elevates the entire golf experience.”

The par-5 9^th hole is a shining example of how No. 4 has been reinvented through Hanse’s vision and touch. More than 25 pot bunkers are replaced with sprawling, sandy native areas, and a massive crossbunker spans the width of the fairway, connecting with nearby holes and tying together the natural landforms. Green complexes throughout the course have been lowered to fit the landscape, and are complemented by Hanse’s unique bunker designs.

“Among Pinehurst’s nine golf courses, No. 4 has always held a special place in the resort’s history,” says Bob Dedman, Jr., in speaking for the Dedman family, the owners of the resort. “We entrusted Gil and his team to interpret and execute the vision of making No. 4 more natural and authentic to the Sandhills of North Carolina. Gil, Jim and the team have been great to work with and have far exceeded our expectations.”

The USGA has already named No. 4, along with No. 2, as co-hosts for the 2019 U.S. Amateur Championship. It marks the third time the prestigious event will be played at Pinehurst and the first since 2008. Stroke play will be contested on both courses with the match play championship held on No. 2. Hanse says this is exactly the type of symbiotic relationship that should exist between the two courses.

“No. 4 is a companion in the landscape, but it is not a tribute to No. 2 in the features,” Hanse says. “The greens are different, the approaches are different and we wanted to take advantage of the landforms, which are much more dramatic than those on No. 2.”

Completion of No. 4 is bittersweet for Hanse, who spent parts of the past two years onsite with partner Jim Wagner and his construction crew, “The Cavemen,” working both on No. 4 and Pinehurst’s short course, The Cradle. He describes living in the Dornoch Cottage – Donald Ross’s home in Pinehurst – as “one of the most meaningful things that has ever happened to me.”

The reimagination of No. 4 is the latest in a series of bold moves for one of the world’s most iconic golf destinations. The restoration of No. 2, acquisition of No. 9, the opening of The Cradle and an expansion of the 18-hole putting course Thistle Dhu are complete, as are restorative enhancements to Pinehurst No. 3. The Pinehurst Brewing Company will open this fall, located in the village’s historic steam plant.

World’s Largest Golf Outing Returns Aug. 6

On August 6, the Fisher House Foundation will team up with golf courses throughout the United States for the third edition of World’s Largest Golf Outing. One hundred percent of the funds raised will be donated to the Fisher House Foundation, best known for their network of 76 comfort homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment.

Currently, there are more than 130 courses from coast to coast participating in the World’s Largest Golf Outing — a fun way for the civilian community to give back to those who sacrifice for our freedom and enjoy a round of golf at the same time.

For more than 25 years, the Fisher House program has provided “a home away from home” for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. These homes offer free, temporary lodging to military and veterans’ families, allowing them to be close to their loved one during a medical crisis and focus on what’s important—the healing process. There are 76 Fisher Houses located in the US, Germany and United Kingdom. These homes are located near major military hospitals and VA centers, making it convenient for service men and women and their families who need lodging close by.

Fisher Houses have up to 21 suites, with private bedrooms and baths. Families share a common kitchen, laundry area, a warm dining room and an inviting living room. How About A Hank Haney Golf Cruise?

Blue World Voyages, a new cruise line for active adults, will collaborate with Hank Haney Golf for ongoing programs aboard ship and ashore, including two special “Golf Only” sailings per year.

“This underscores our commitment to embed sports and wellness into every aspect of the cruise experience for our passengers,” said Gene Meehan, Blue World Founder and Chairman. “When we set sail in 2019, we intend to become the ultimate cruise ship for golfers.”

Meehan adds that on most cruise ships, guests hoping to play a round of golf are pretty much left on their own to make this happen. “We plan to change that, with golf programs designed by one of the legendary figures for the sport: Hank Haney,” says Meehan, an 8-handicap player.

The Job:

Play 2 rounds of golf in each of the 7 regions and bring your best golfing friend along.
14 rounds and 14 days total, plus two travel days.
Visit other golf courses in area and find out some info for interested golfing visitors.
Explore some of the areas’ 19th hole offering for the best of food and drink.
Create Vlogs for YouTube as well as Instagram posts and stories throughout each day and any other forms of media you can think of.
Create a complete Golf Guide on completion of the trip; this will be through a blog as well as YouTube video of your adventure in Scotland Home of Golf.
All golf tee times and lunch at the courses are provided for as will B&B accommodation and car hire/ travel to Scotland
The winner receives an allowance of £750.00GBP (just under $1,000 at current exchange rates) each for the duration of the trip

The contest is now live, and applications close July 27. The winner is announced August 3, with the two weeks running September 1-16.
