PHONE ON THE RANGE
“Go to the range and make a couple videos, then send them to me,” Patri asked me as I wore the rust off my game last spring. So off I went to the local muni where I took up residence at the far left side with plenty of room behind me so I could set up my iPhone to record a few 7-iron shots both down-the-line and face-on. I used the nifty Selfie i-Phone holder (www.selfiegolfusa.com), which uses “chip clips” of different sizes to secure a smart phone to the side of a golf bag, an alignment rod slipped through the bag’s towel loop (my method) — whatever works. It’s designed specifically for recording swings on the range or during a practice round. The trick is getting the phone’s lens in the proper positions for both angles — directly behind the hand line for down-the-line shots and straight at the midsection for face-on, at about waist height in both cases. The angle needs to be wide enough to keep the entire swing in the frame, and make sure you have decent light so your instructor can see everything clearly.
Helpful hint: I used my iPhone’s camera app, but the V1 app offers its own camera with superimposed down-the-line and face-on silhouettes to help get the alignment just so.
It took some fiddling to get it right, but once I was lined up, I hit the record button and went to town.
