THE CLINCHER
“Here’s what you do really, really well: You’re very consistent at what you’re doing,” Weizer said. “The amount of rotation is very consistent, and the consistency at impact is very similar, between 92 and 96 percent. Anything 75 percent and above is what you see on TV, according to the data. Now, you would think that, you’re excellent, so why are you at 70.9 percent? Because SAM doesn’t like arc. So he dings you that way. But that’s about as high as I’ve seen in a long time; that’s tour quality.”
Move over, Ben Crenshaw, Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.
At least in my mind.

Either way, I got A LOT out of this session, as I did with the Club Champion driver fitting in 2018. By concentrating solely on matching every golfer with his or her ideal equipment, they can stay up on every technological improvement, train their fitters accordingly and constantly, and give those of us woke enough to give in — and get fit — the knowledge we need to succeed on the green, even if we don’t end up buy a new putter (SAM recommended a half mallet like the Ping Sigma for me).
Weizer himself vetoes the machine on that score. “I’ve had the same putter for 15 years, and I put it on SAM and he says it’s not right for me. But you’ve gotta like what you’re looking at.”
Notch one for the “feel” believers among us. Still, SAM, and Club Champion, pack too much of a data punch to ignore forever, and they know they have the goods to help us make putting less of a chore and more of a well-informed joy.
“The business of the putter fitting process has changed quite a bit, and I don’t think all the green grass guys are going to be able to keep up,” Weizer asserts. “There are so many variables — we have 30,000 variables here.”
Leave it to Club Champion to dial in just the right variable for you.
