The anticipation is building for the upcoming golf season in Western Canada as enthusiasts await the opening of three of the three iconic Fairmont courses in Jasper, Banff, and Whistler, with a special focus on marking the centennial of Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge’s celebrated Stanley Thompson-designed course. Set against stunning mountain backdrops and panoramic views, golfers can look forward to playing these renowned courses, each offering a unique blend of challenging play and luxury ‘stay & play’ amenities that have captivated players from around the world for generations.

Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Golf Club

Following the 2024 wildfire complex that devasted Jasper, this award-winning golf course is set to welcome golfers back for the 2025 season starting on July 1. For a century, this Stanley Thompson masterpiece has captivated players with its strategic design, panoramic mountain vistas, and iconic holes like Cleopatra, considered one of the best par-3 holes in the world. Since the fires, the course will undergo thoughtful enhancements that both honor Thompson’s original vision and adapt it for modern play. From expanded greens to refined mowing lines and rejuvenated bunkers, these improvements will ensure this course – once graced by celebrities like Bing Crosby and Marilyn Monroe during Jasper’s “Hollywood of the North” heyday – maintains its status as one of the world’s finest golf experiences well into the future. Anticipated to open May 2 (Tunnel 9-hole) and May 9 (Stanley Thompson 18-hole), these courses provide the essential ingredients for the perfect Alberta golf vacation: from breathtaking views to a magnificent layout, they are a thrill for every golfer fortunate enough to play here. Both amateurs and professionals alike are continually amazed by Stanley’s intricate design, including unique hole placements and the optical illusions created by surrounding mountains that delight and challenge at every turn. With rugged granite formations and 400 feet of elevation change, this course provides a thrilling challenge for golfers of all skill levels. Among its many standout features is the signature par-3 #8 hole, which boasts an elevated tee deck with impressive views of Whistler Mountain. Lake Geneva, Wis. – March 2025 – Grand Geneva Resort & Spa, one of the premier golf resorts in the Midwest, has announced the upcoming addition of its new short-course golf course, Wee Nip, which is set to welcome players in the 2026 season. A significant addition to the resort’s extensive golf offerings, the new course is designed to cater to golfers of all skill levels and groups, providing a fun, challenging and engaging environment for seasoned players and novice golfers.

The term “wee nip” derives from the Scottish phrase that means a small drink or a quick sip, reflecting the playful spirit of the course. The new course is intended to offer a relaxed golfing experience, where players can enjoy a friendly round without the pressures of a traditional long course. It also offers seasoned golfers a fun opportunity to embrace creativity, challenge, and strategy.

Designed by Matt Dusenberry with the award-winning Dusenberry Design, Wee Nip will feature 10 holes averaging around 90 yards with rounds expected to take approximately 90 minutes to complete. The course will also include music speakers with a viewing area offering food and beverage service with to-go options.

“Grand Geneva’s golf courses are among the best in Wisconsin, and Wee Nip further enhances the resort’s reputation as an ideal golf getaway,” shared Skip Harless, Managing Director of Grand Geneva Resort & Spa. “Our existing golf courses already appeal to golfers of all skill levels, but Wee Nip encourages casual play, making it perfect for novice golfers and players of all ages. The course fosters creativity for advanced golfers, providing opportunities to enhance their skills and experiment with different swings and strategies. It will also be an exciting new experience for our many corporate, incentive, association and social events.”

While the new short course is planned to open in spring 2026, the resort will unveil its new golf practice facility in June of this year. The new facility features a short game area with multiple putting, chipping, pitching and bunker practice greens. Situated on Grand Geneva’s former airport area, the new practice area also offers a variety of target greens with distances ranging from 50 to 360 yards. Grand Geneva’s golf courses are scheduled to open in late March 2025, weather permitting. The resort is currently home to two championship golf courses: The Brute and The Highlands, both of which have earned accolades for their stunning landscapes and challenging layouts.

The Brute, a mid-century modern gem, is a par-72 course. At over 7,000 yards, it is known as one of the most challenging layouts in the Midwest with its 68 bunkers and huge rolling greens. The Highlands, a Scottish-inspired, links-style course, was originally designed by Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus, and transformed in 1996 by Bob Cupp.

The 2025 season also introduces new programming and offerings through the resort’s Golf Academy instruction program, which provides high-quality instruction for golfers of all skill levels and features state-of-the-art equipment, experienced PGA professionals and personalized programs. Grand Geneva is also known for its exceptional private golf lessons and group outing programming and packages.

“Golf continues to gain popularity, especially among younger generations and diverse demographics,” said Ryan Brown, Director of Golf & Ski at Grand Geneva. “The addition of Wee Nip reinforces Grand Geneva’s commitment to enhancing the guest experience and supporting the growth of golf. With a variety of golf clinics, programs for all skill levels, championship courses, and an upcoming new short course, Grand Geneva is one of the best destinations for both seasoned golfers and newcomers to the sport.”

Shangri-La Resort Welcomes Ryan Snyder as Director of Golf

Career club professional brings his experience to Oklahoma’s premier golf destination

Shangri-La Resort, Oklahoma’s premier waterfront golf and outdoor recreation destination, has named golf industry veteran Ryan Snyder its new Director of Golf.

The West Virginia native has spent the past 13 years in various golf-professional roles in Florida, including Island Country Club in Marco Island, Eagle Creek Country Club in Naples, and The Boca Raton Resort & Club. Most recently, Snyder served as director of golf at Indian Spring Country Club in Boynton Beach. He started his golf career at Kanawha Country Club in his hometown of South Charleston, W. Va. – a club where his father was a member – before moving on to courses in Pennsylvania, Florida, and Georgia.

“The Shangri-La team is extremely pleased and fortunate to have Ryan Snyder as our director of golf,” said General Manager Lance Funderburk. “Ryan’s experience in the golf industry, expertise in operations, personality and talent at managing a golf staff is an ideal fit for our world-class golf operation.”

Snyder is a Certified PGA Member in every advanced field offered, including Golf Operations, General Management, Player Development, and Teaching and Coaching and earned a Bachelors and Master’s Degree in Public Administration with minors in Economics, Sociology, and Biology from West Virginia University. Snyder says Shangri-La felt welcoming and home-like from his first visit to Oklahoma’s premier golf destination.

“Since I got here six weeks ago, everybody I’ve run into says this is a great place to live and raise your kids,” says Snyder. “As for the property, we have one of the best-conditioned facilities in the state. The conditions are so good all the time. This spring, summer and fall, golfers can expect peak playing conditions. I actually called the superintendent before I took the job and talked to him for several hours, to make sure he wasn’t going anywhere. There is no weed penetration on the entire property, which is absolutely amazing and led to me actually taking the job.”

Shangri-La’s visionary owner Eddy Gibbs has transformed the resort into the pride of Northeast Oklahoma and put the lakefront vacation oasis on the map nationally with an investment of more than $100 million into the property’s accommodations and upscale leisure amenities since taking it over in 2010.

In addition to the 119-room resort hotel, an indoor pool, 6,500 square-foot outdoor resort pool with splash pad and tanning ledge, luxury spa, full-service marina on gleaming, 46,500-acre Grand Lake O’ The Cherokees, and six distinct dining and cocktail venues culminate in an unforgettable getaway for golfers, families, groups, corporate and association retreats, and weddings.

Surrounded by the waters of Grand Lake O’ The Cherokees on three sides, the revered 27-hole championship Shangri-La golf course – including the Heritage, Legends, and Champions Nines – meanders through rolling parkland landscapes with elevated Bentgrass greens and clever bunkering along with more open, flowing fairways accented by ponds, streams, and the breathtaking lakefront. The extraordinary year-old par-3 golf course, The Battlefield, with elevation changes of more than 100 feet, has already been hailed “the most incredible par-3 course” that “sets new standards in short course experiences” by leading golf publications. Each of the 18 holes on The Battlefield is named in honor of a military serviceperson from Oklahoma who made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States during World War II.

Snyder believes Shangri-La is a fantastic place for a group getaway, with so many renovated and completely new amenities like the hotel, marina, food and beverage outlets, tennis courts, simulators, and boat rental.

“This place is at the top of the list in Oklahoma,” says Snyder. “People love to use this place as a retreat. They just want to come play golf and just enjoy the peacefulness. That’s what this place is about. We are a little more laid back and relaxed than some of the other upper echelon clubs, but Shangri-La is an incredible place with an interesting history. The executive team and staff here is amazing, so I don’t plan to leave anytime soon.”

Wild Times at Horseshoe Bay’s Bronco Off Roadeo Experience

Eyes on the road. It’s literally the first rule of driving, right? The only trouble is all I can see out of the windshield of the two-and-a-half-ton 4 X 4 behemoth I’ve agreed to drive through the rugged Texas Hill Country is rich blue sky contrasting with some lazy, pale stratus clouds. Behind the wheel. Staring straight up at the sky. Nothing resembling a road is anywhere in sight and my Ford Bronco Off Roadeo Experience instructor “Hollywood,” who was the one who told me drive up this impossibly steep granite wall, keeps assuring me that I’m doing great. Do I believe her? I’m pretty sure only three of our Bronco’s 35-inch tires are touching terra firma and I just heard audible gasps from the people in the Bronco behind us.

It turns out that, with some strategic turns of the wheel along with calculated and gentle intervals of gassing and braking, a Ford Bronco can climb absurdly steep and rocky terrain without breaking a sweat. The Ford Bronco Off Roadeo Experience at Horseshoe Bay Resort’s Grey Wolf Ranch was designed to help Bronco owners, dealers and salespeople to learn to dizzying array of technological features of their state of the art Ford Broncos, like Trail 1-Pedal Drive, 4×4 operation and G.O.A.T. Modes.

Now this luxury adventure experience is open to all Horseshoe Bay Resort guests. When you get to Grey Wolf Ranch, a magnificent and majestic hunk of class Hill Country land, Trail Guides orient guests on the safety features of the Ford Bronco and prep them to hit these purpose-built trails. Every group of drivers has a Trail Guides assigned to them who coach drivers at the front, middle, and back of the off-road caravan.

Bronco owners and adrenaline lovers from all over flock to Grey Wolf Ranch to test the Bronco’s all terrain capabilities while doubling down on a healthy adrenaline rush. Drivers navigate stone washes, rocky terrain, tight turns and climbs that would require AAA intervention in most of our personal daily drivers. The Horseshoe Bay Resort Off-Roadeo property is one of only four in the United States. The other facilities featuring Bronco adventures are in Gilford, NH, Las Vegas, NV, and Moab, UT.

More than 7,000 people per year take in this experience and it’s expected to grow now that the experience is open to resort guests. It’s the perfect way to add some adventure to a golf getaway or casual long weekend.

Bronco owners have access to a 10-hour Off Roadeo Experience. For Resort guests at Horseshoe Bay, the experience is shortened to four hours but covers a ton of exciting elements along the trails. Ford provides the full fleet of completely equipped Broncos that guests use for the off-roading fun. Bronco owners use their own vehicles for the purpose of getting used to driving them and maxing out their skills on the Bronco’s features.

Guests learn key basics like appropriate seating and hand-on-the-wheel placement, ideal mirror angles, and also the fun stuff, more advanced off-roading lessons. In the full class, you can learn skills like forging water, navigating ditches, surviving steep hills, left-foot breaking, crossing boulders, and how to select a route when you come to obstacles. Guests can take turns practicing these maneuvers and also learn important hand signals they can give to other driver to help them traverse the uneven terrain.

While resort guests only borrow a Bronco for this experience, Ford reps say eight percent of guests have ended up buying a new Ford not long after their Off Roadeo experience, and 63 percent of those purchases were Broncos. Whether your charmed into buying a Bronco or you’re just looking for a fun escape full of adrenaline-charging times, this is one experience you won’t soon forget.

It’s back.

After a multi-year hiatus under Brown Golf ownership, Palmetto Hall Golf Club is rejoining Hilton Head Golf Island, a collective of 26 courses across Beaufort, Bluffton and Jasper counties that helps promote the area as one of the world’s premier golf destinations.

The Heritage Golf Group, which owns and operates Hilton Head Island-based Oyster Reef, Port Royal and Shipyard Golf Clubs, recently acquired Palmetto Golf and Country Club, expanding its island folio to 117 total holes of golf.

Opened in the early 90s, the 36-hole venue features layouts designed by Arthur Hills and Robert Cupp. The Arthur Hills Course was the first to welcome golfers in 1991 and was named one of Golf Digest’s “Best New Courses.” The Robert Cupp Course followed in 1993 with a slope rating of 152 – the highest in the state at the time – and a series of geometrically shaped bunkers Cupp designed via CAD (computer-aided design).

“With the resurgence in golf travel and the number of choices golfers have for golf getaways, it’s crucial we promote our region’s amazing golf, lodging and culinary assets,” says Mark Burnett, President and CEO of Heritage Golf Group. “We are thrilled with the recent addition of Palmetto Hall Golf and Country Club to our portfolio and excited for its inclusion in Hilton Head Golf Island alongside Oyster Reef, Port Royal and Shipyard.”

Robert Cupp Course

As part of the acquisition, Heritage Golf Group has committed to a multi-million-dollar golf course improvement project scheduled to begin in the coming weeks. The Arthur Hills and Robert Cupp courses were long considered among the Lowcountry’s best layouts, and Heritage Golf Group’s clear-cut objective is to return them to their 90s glory.

As a pairing, the courses present a compelling contrast – the traditional look and feel of the Arthur Hills Course juxtaposed against the ultra-modern shaping and geometric bunkers of the Robert Cupp Course. Both have been continually praised for their ingenuity, shot values, playability and conditioning.

“It’s an exciting day when we can welcome one of the area’s iconic golf brands back to Hilton Head Golf Island,” says Lowcountry Golf Course Owner’s Association President Brad Mara. “The addition of Palmetto Hall Golf and Country Club increases our marketing collective to 28 courses, including world-renown properties such as The Sea Pines Resort and Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort. With our wide-array of accommodation types and world-class restaurants, there’s never been a better time to visit Golf Island.”

And getting to Golf Island has never been easier.

Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH) on the island’s north end offers non-stop and one-stop service from multiple hub cities and connections via American Airlines, Delta and United. American offers daily non-stop flights from Charlotte and seasonal service from Dallas / Ft. Worth, Philadelphia and Washington National (DCA). Delta has daily flights to Atlanta and United provides daily non-stop service to Newark (EWR) and Washington Dulles (IAD).

Golfers can also utilize Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV), with direct flights from numerous East Coast, Midwest and Texas airports on several major and discount airlines. For golfers who prefer to hit the open road, major metro areas in the Carolinas, Georgia and north Florida are under a half-day’s drive, while several Mid-Atlantic and Midwestern cities are seven to nine hours away.

Once there, golf aficionados will appreciate the lineup of world-class venues sculpted by vaunted architects Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus, George Fazio, Arthur Hills, Rees Jones, Robert Trent Jones, Willard Byrd, Davis Love III and Clyde Johnston. Hilton Head Island is home to The Sea Pines Resort where the PGA TOUR makes its only regular South Carolina stop each April at Harbour Town Golf Links for the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing.
