Cleveland CBX Wedges
These are the wedges for the rest of us from industry stalwart Cleveland — who else? The company’s new CBX Wedges are more forgiving than your grandma on Christmas morning, absolving us all from the sin of mixing game improvement irons with “blade” style wedges. Does that make any sense — that the most critical shots (from 100 yards and in) be relegated to clubs that are heavier and far harder to hit than the perimeter-weighted helpers in the bag? Truth be told, I hadn’t thought of that until these life-savers took over my short game recently. Vokeys are beyond beautiful, but my golf swing is a study in ugliness.
Cleveland has made cavity-back wedges before but the CBXs are decidedly design-forward — Feel Balance technology moves the CG forward toward the center, making for less shanks, clanks and dreaded scoops. Deeper, narrower Rotex grooves (shared by the RTX-3 wedges) max out the spin within legal limits; and added weight in the toe increases feel and control. A wider flange on the bottom also instills a little needed confidence if delicate 60-yard shots are what routinely muck up your scorecard. All that and a 115-gram True Temper Dynamic Gold shaft designed for the occasion make for a true leap forward in the wedge-world.
