Here’s a first golf entertainment hasn’t seen:

A hidden camera reality series, based on TV’s nostalgic hit “Candid Camera,” entitled “Ambush with David Feherty.”  The ex-Ryder Cup star turned network TV golf commentator and stand-up comedian now stars in his own series where practical jokes and hijinks take unassuming golfers by surprise.

And yet another first:

“Ambush” is one of several original, free-to-watch shows airing on the new Golf Nation that sneak-peeked on December 5 on www.golfnation.com.  The new golf-lifestyle entertainment channel is the first and only producer of original golf-lifestyle entertainment shows with the ability for viewers to instantly purchase items while never leaving the screen.

That’s why Golf Nation is referred to as “Netflix meets QVC.”

In addition to Ferherty’s hilarity, commercial-free, five- to 30-minute shows include:

  • Don’t I Know You? – Golf’s “Newlywed Game;” first episode with Zach & Kim Johnson
  • Golf Unseen – Adventures to exotic golf courses with cultural experiences
  • No Judgment – Three female friends from Grueter Golf breaking down golf’s barriers
  • Tee Shots – Drink, chat, swing, repeat hosted by famous mixologist Bill Binder
  • Versus – Golf influencers compete head-to-head
  • Buy. Play. – Hottest golf products on the planet

Golf Nation and its purchase-now “buy bars” inserted on-screen into each show will be available via mobile app, connected-smart TVs, Apple TV, Android, Fire TV and Roku in early 2023.

“Shopping video commerce is key to Golf Nation, and viewers can buy what they see on the screen without the annoyance of leaving the show they’re watching,” says Nick Buzzell, Chairman and CEO of Golf Nation.  “It’s a watch, buy, play experience.”

Golf Nation is hardly a first-rodeo, major development for producer NBTV Studios and its sister to NBTV Channels.  The company created the dynamic Spirits Network that sells countless products inside “Cocktail History,” “Tales from the Cask,” “Sipping Point” and “Science of Spirits” and other series of shows.

Why golf, though, as its next vertical?  Surveys show more than 60% of Spirits Network viewers count golf as a passion.

“Brand are lining up to promote their offerings inside our shows because our audience of golfers on Spirits Network is already conditioned to buy products during shows, “Buzzell says.  “We are heavily investing in substantially growing that built-in audience in the short term.”

Golf equipment, travel, fashion, technology, instruction, club lifestyle and fitness brands are already onboard with Golf Nation.  More than 10 non-endemic brands are expected to be fully immersed selling their products via on-screen ‘buy bars’ inside Golf Nation shows in Q1.

“Golf Nation is a pioneer in transforming the way golf entertainment is presented and products are bought and sold, “says Suzy Whaley, President of Golf Nation.

The first female President of the PGA of America, she is also a Master PGA Professional, one of only a handful of women to play in a PGA TOUR event and commentator on ESPN and Sirius XM coverage of Tour events.  Whaley oversees Golf Nation’s industry relations, brand involvement and show ideation.

The team aside Buzzell and Whaley is equally strong. Sports media veteran Noah Coslov is General Manager while advisory board members include Mindy Grossman of Home Shopping Network and Weight Watchers CEO fame, golf marketing PR and visionary Rich Katz, PGA Reach Trustee Dee Robinson and longtime business development executive Pete Arrichiello.

Investors are highlighted by Mark Bezos (High Post Capital), David Nichols (former President of K-Swiss), John Esposito (Chairman of Whistle Pig and former CEO of Bacardi North America), and other family offices and venture funds.

“The ‘buy bar’ technology is key as is our team’s incredible experience and creativity producing entertaining, original golf-lifestyle shows,” says Buzzell.  “We aren’t where you go to watch Tour events hole by hole.”

If the handful of fun “Ambush with David Ferherty” shows is a forecast of upcoming goodies from Golf Nation, the new streaming, on-demand channel will be popular for a long time to come.

Nutrition is often overlooked by many golfers, even at the pro level. But as author of Golf Nutrition Filippo Scalise, points out, it takes more than just physical endurance and mental concentration to post low scores.

Golf is a very old sport, which you can play either at an amateur level or at a pro level, in circuits around the world. During 2019 PGA Tour, Brooks Koepka leaded the average score of the season with 69.3 shots, thus winning 9,684,006 USD. However, Charley Hoffman closed it at 141st place in the money list with an average score of 71.3 (only 2 more shots!), gaining 1,468,855 USD. With such low margins, golf players have always been looking for every possible way to realize the best scores. Physical endurance and mental concentration are key to improve every shot, but at the same time are hard to keep all along the competition. Despite hard training and ground-breaking equipment, pros know too well that results often come from minimal advantages. This said this, many disregard the importance of nutrition in this sport, and also how much they could benefit from a good planning, saving them shots.

While some associate golf with retirement and others think of it as a hobby that’s quite expensive, one thing is for sure: this sport is very difficult to master, and learning it can be quite a challenge. Learning how to perfectly hit the ball requires a lot of physical coordination, as well as plenty of concentration. This is why golf courses are so remote and have such a calm and relaxing atmosphere. However, there are over 55 million players in 206 countries around the world, which speaks volumes about the popularity of this great sport, despite the often frustrating nature of grasping only the basics.

Golf is a sport that’s suitable for people of all genders and ages, although the vast majority of players are men. According to the National Golf Foundation, in 2020, nearly 25 million individuals played golf on a golf course in the United States. There are approximately 15,500 golf courses throughout the country, with Florida ranking first as the state with the largest number. Veterans are one of the diverse and numerous demographics that play this sport, and they even have their own group, by the name of Veteran Golfers Association, which consists of over 9,100 members at the moment.

How Mark, a Navy Veteran, Discovered Golf as the Perfect Sport for Him

Mark, a 67-year-old man from New Orleans, Louisiana, who served as a pipefitter in the U.S. Navy between 1973 and 1989, is one of the myriads of veterans who now struggle with the aftermath of asbestos exposure. He was diagnosed with asbestosis, a very serious chronic lung disease, in the spring of 2002. When James, a fellow veteran and a victim of asbestos exposure himself, suggested playing golf to Mark in 2005 as a way to relieve his shortness of breath and chest pain, the idea sparked his interest right away. As a result, he began looking for golf courses in his area and found multiple in Lake Charles, a city very close to his home.

Naturally, the next step for the two veterans was learning as much as possible about the necessary golf equipment they had to purchase so as to begin playing. They first started looking for clubs, and each bought a driver, a 3-wood, a putter, a 5 iron, a wedge, a 7 iron, as well as a 9 iron, which are recommended for beginners. Furthermore, they made sure to have all the required club components, such as clubheads, shafts, and grips. Needless to say, Mark and James did not forget the tees and the golf balls. As for the golf bags, they opted for carrying bags, as they planned to move around the golf course exclusively by walking in order to get as much exercise as possible. Lastly, they invested in some good pairs of golf shoes, which are extremely important to both professional and beginner golfers.

Before embarking on this exciting adventure, which had already made Mark and James feel better mentally, they made the wise choice to take golf lessons to have a clear starting point in this journey. The duration of the golf lessons was about 6 months, at the end of which the veterans became decent players and were able to enjoy this rewarding sport by themselves. Both learned the basic golf techniques, such as the different types of shots, including approach shot, drive, chip, and pitch, how to practice and master their swing, but also more advanced tips, like holding the club from the side and not from underneath and ensuring that the clubface opens on the backswing.

Encouraging Other Sick Veterans to Try Golf

Having witnessed so many fellow veterans pass away due to the horrible diseases asbestos exposure causes, Mark and James came up with the idea of proposing veterans in poor health from his area join the two in playing golf. They thought that it would provide these brave people with the opportunity to connect with other veterans, as well as other golfers, have fun outdoors, and ease their symptoms. Consequently, Mark went on Facebook and got in touch with 4 other veterans from Louisiana who were willing to play golf with him and James.

Soon, the two began showing their new acquaintances how to play, and it wasn’t long before a strong bond formed between the six golf buddies. The time everyone invested in striving to learn how to play golf reasonably has definitely paid off, as every member of the new team has gone from using their short irons successfully to striking through their 5 irons impressively over the course of almost one year. Right now, the goal of the six golfer veterans, who still consider themselves beginners, is to master hitting a 7 iron 170 yards down the fairway.

As the years passed, the golf buddies did not even notice that they began forming a united, inseparable team whose members relied on the company of each other to make the burden of struggling with a serious disease less heavy. In addition to meeting up to play golf in Lake Charles, they soon began gathering for other outdoor group activities, such as barbecues, hiking, and fishing. What makes the story of Mark and his fellow veteran friends even more heartwarming is that, because they would show up at Lake Charles to play golf at least once a week, other regular golf players in the area noticed their team. This led to Mark and his golf buddies expanding their circle of friends and receiving emotional support from the healthy people as well, which is essential when you have to resign to your incurable disease.

California is a top vacation destination for golf enthusiasts being home to several top rated golf courses. With the 2021 US Open returning to California this June, at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, now is the perfect time to take a look at the championship’s history in the region and reminisce some of the most memorable moments.

[ngg src=”galleries” ids=”20″ display=”basic_slideshow” gallery_width=”1000″ arrows=”1″]

  1. California hosted 13 US Opens until the present

The US Open Golf Championship, the third of the four major championships in golf, takes place annually (except in 2020 when it was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak), at a different golf course in the country. Without counting this year’s US Open there have been 13 US Opens in California in the past. Golf courses that hosted the championship over the years:

  • Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach – 2019, 2010, 2000, 1992, 1982, 1972.
  • Olympic Club, Lake Course in Daly City– 2012.
  • Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla – 2008.
  • Olympic Club, Lake Course in San Francisco – 1998, 1987, 1966, 1955.
  • Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades – 1948.

  1. The Pebble Beach Golf Links has been the most popular Californian location so far

The US Open first came to the famous Pebble Beach Golf Links in 1972 and returned five times afterward.

The Pebble Beach Golf Links is one of the top rated public golf courses in the country. Tee time here can be quite expensive but at least you can play in the footsteps of legends without being part of the golfing elite. Plus, the course offers some of the most stunning views.

But, before deciding upon Pebble Beach as your next golf vacation destination you should know that this course is not among the easy ones. The great Jack Nicklaus described the course as “playing as close to impossible as it can get” and Jeff Sluman, the 1992 runner-up said about the final round that it was “as much fun as a migraine.”

  1. Two out of the three double eagles in the championship’s history happened in California

There have been only three double eagles in the history of the US Open and two of them happened on a Californian course. The first was achieved by Shaun Micheel on the 6th hole of the Pebble Beach Golf Links in the fourth round in 2010. The second one was shot by Nick Watney on the 17th hole of the Olympic Club course in the first round in 2012.

The other double eagle was shot all the way back in 1985 by T.C. Chen on the 2nd hole of the Oakland Hills Country Club course.

  1. Tiger Woods won with the widest margin of victory at Pebble Beach

Tiger Woods still holds the record for the widest margin of victory with fifteen strokes. He achieved this record in the 2000 US Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links when he dominated the championship, finishing well clear of the runners-up Ernie Els and Miguel Angel Jimenez.

  1. The Torrey Pines Golf Course was home to Woods most impressive comeback in 2008

Every true golf fan surely remembers the improbable comeback Tiger Woods accomplished at the 2008 US Open when he won against Rocco Mediate in the playoff, with an injured knee that required surgery.

Tiger’s run was a bumpy one as he started out playing his opening hole at seven over par. It may be hard to believe but that is right, he made three double bogeys on the first hole. After the championship’s first day things were not looking too good for Woods who looked like he was going to be no threat for the lead.

But he made a magnificent recovery when coming off a bogey at the 12th hole, Woods proceeded to sink an eagle putt at the 13th hole, a birdie at the 17th hole, then another eagle putt on the 18th hole that surged him into the lead.

This was the most recent US Open playoff and the last of its kind (18-hole) with the change to a two-hole aggregate format in 2018.

Hopefully, the US Open will return strong to the Torrey Pines Golf Course and we will witness even more memorable moments that will live on throughout the ages.
